Follicular Unit Transplant

Follicular Unit Transplant Procedure

FUT surgery is a follicular unit transplant procedure. This form of surgery is for people who are losing their hair and want to have a full head of hair again.

There are procedures out there that will literally give you the appearance of more hair, but FUT surgery will actually give you hair in the space you need it most. Using a donor of hair follicles on your head, you can build a whole new head of hair.

FUT Procedure

Hair is more resistant to balding on the back and sides of the head, so follicles are removed from here and relocated to places where you need it. The hair taken to be grafted must be separated from areas where the hair is permanent and not subject to DHT.

The scalp is first used for anaesthetics, in which a donor strip of tissue is removed from the scalp. This is then used to make grafts for places where you’d like to have hair. Small holes are created in the scalp when the grafts are created. This is where you’re going to put your grafts.

The design of your grafts is very critical, because this will decide the final look. It, however, varies from patient to patient. You’re going to have something tailored for you based on your history of hair loss and how likely you’re going to lose your hair again in the future.

The most important aspect of creating your new look is to determine how many grafts you’re going to place on your hands. This will give full esthetic impact when done correctly. If more than one session is required, this will be discussed with you during the consultation. The problem with FUT surgery is that you will get a horizontal scar on your scalp from the donor strip that has been cut out.

FUT Surgery VS. FUE Surgery

Many clinics do use FUT surgery, although it is slowly being substituted in favor of FUE surgery. Healthy follicles are removed from the donor region of the scalp during FUE, and then grafted to areas where you need them most.

Topical anesthetic is often used, which reduces some complications associated with certain transplantation procedures. There will be no scarring you can feel, so you will be able to go back to work the next day. It will only take up to 7 days to heal fully.

For FUE, there’s a much higher success rate, which is why so many more people opt for FUT. With FUT you may need stitches, but because Fuse is a minimally invasive procedure, that won’t be the case. Many patients find the procedure so calming that they fall asleep!

You’ll be left with a thick, naturally hairy head with no way to detect the procedure you’ve performed. The best thing about FUE is that you can even remove the marks from previous operations. You will see immediate results, but the best results will be about 6-12 months after your procedure.
